Alex Salzman’s journey in responsible business formally began at the age of 17 with the Vancouver To Toronto Ride For Youth, a corporate sponsored charity bike tour that that took 7 cyclists over 4500 kilometers across Canada, generating $27,000 for children’s charities at home and abroad - Kids Help Phone and Casa Guatemala, and generated regional and national print and television coverage.


Taking a leave of absence from a degree in economics at Princeton University, Alex joined friend from Toronto, and fellow social entrepreneur, Tom Szaky under his leadership of the initial team at TerraCycle, Inc. (www.terracycle.net) producing the product’s made from waste.

 

Return to complete his studies, Alex saw the opportunity to assist the growing number of companies engaged in corporate responsibility by launching international cause marketing and consulting agency Blue Horizon Media. The boutique agency gave birth to a sister company Rethos, which built a network of social media sites (www.Rethos.com) focused on uniting individuals, non-profit organizations and responsible businesses on common social and environmental issues of passion. Rethos was acquired in 2008.

 

Alex is now leading a team to launch, VisCap, a socially responsible investment fund focused on supplying growth capital and expertise to leading private equity investments in media, consumer products and clean technology.Alex has shared his knowledge and passion for bottom line enhancing corporate responsibility strategies, and socially responsible investment opportunities at universities and conference in Canada, the United States and Europe.
